Old Town Road, Country music and Gatekeeping

So unless you have been living under a rock, I’m sure you all have heard of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” and the controversy. If not, the song is a twangy ode to the country life that has a mash between trap music and country. I don’t like the song too much, but it is catchy. Billboard recently removed his track from its Hot Country Songs chart, which kicked off an intense debate on whether the song should be considered country music.

So my post is going to be different but still music related. I’m just going to do a short review on these earbuds I purchased a few months ago. For some reason, I always have to replace earbuds due to wear and tear or they just fail. But when I’m looking for replacement earbuds I always consider the balance between the price and quality; by quality, I’m referring to sound. Plus, my phone has a built-in DAC so I’m just trying to use that combo to get the best possible sound quality. But I really wouldn’t consider myself an audiophile.

Where is Jai Paul?

Jai (pronounced Jay) Paul is a producer, singer and songwriter from the UK. In 2011 he released the song demo “BTSTU” (Back to Save the Universe) on his Myspace page, which received numerous plays on the radio in the UK and gained a lot of coverage in the blogs. An edited version of “BTSTU” entitled “BTSTU (Edit)” was officially released on April 21, 2011, via an independent record label. The song received airplay again on UK national radio and was critically acclaimed.

NAO – Saturn

UK singer NAO (pronounced “neigh-oh”) recently released her second album Saturn.  Her album is a follow up from her 2016 debut album For All We Know. For the people who aren’t familiar with her music, you’ll notice that she has a very distinctive voice; like there’s a bit of helium or a squeak in her voice. Some might think it could be a vocal effect but it is actually her voice.
